1. The uniformly dark dorsal surface of the tail contrasting with the paler grey rump and upper tail coverts
2. The lack of darker subterminal tail band
3. Hints of brown or rufous coloration on the wings especially, which is an indication of a 1st year bird.
4. The bird is busy moulting. African Cuckoos appear fresh in early summer and worn in late summer whereas Common Cuckoo appear the opposite.
5. Slender and narrow bill and lack of striking yellow/orange coloration
